Od kada je marta 2020.godine prvi put identifikovan novi virus SARS CoV2 i pandemija nastavila globalno da se širi, povećavao se broj zaraženih i trudnica koje su zahtevale hospitalno lečenje, kao i lečenje u jedinicama intenzivne nege. Prema do sada objavljenim studijama i kliničkom iskustvu COVID19 u trudnoći je povezan sa brojnim negativnim maternalnim, fetalnim i neonatalnim ishodima. Fiziološke promene koje se dešavaju u trudnoći, pre svega na nivou imunskog sistema su ključne za što bolje razumevanje patogeneze i kliničke slike COVID19 infekcije u trudnoći. COVID19 se sa majke na novorođenče može preneti na intrauterino, intrapartalno i postpartalno (u direktnom kontaktu ili putem dojenja). Iako se dugo smatralo da nije moguća vertikalna transmisija, virus je izolovan sa fetalne strane placente. Studije su pokazale da su komplikacije u trudnoći i intrapartalno bile značajno češće kod simptomatskih COVID19 pozitivnih trudnica. Lečenje trudnica se ne razlikuje suštinski, iako su studije pokazale značajno veću incidencu hospitalizacije i potrebe za lečenjem u jedinicama intenzivne nege kada su u pitanju žene u trudnoći u odnosu na opštu populaciju žena istih demografskih karakteristika i zdravstvenog stanja. Brojne studije su pokazale da trudnoća sama po sebi predstavlja stanje povećanog rizika za kompikacije vezane za COVID19 iz tog razloga potreban je pojačan nadzor trudnica i prevencija oboljevanja u ovoj posebno vulnerabilnoj kategoriji. Do sada registrovane vakcine su najbolja specifična mera prevencije COVID19 infekcije u trudnoći. Štiteći trudnice štitimo i zdravlje njihovig potomstva.
