SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATION INDEX, NEUTROPHIL LYMPHOCYTE RATIO AND C-REACTIVE PROTEIN IN CHILDREN WITH SARS-COV-2 INFECTION
Abstract
Introduction. Baseline laboratory parameters play an important role in the assessment and management of patients with novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Due to inflammation and tissue destruction caused by SARS-CoV-2, hematological indices, such as systemic inflammatory index (SII) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), might be important as the indicators of the degree of inflammation.
Objective. This study was aimed to investigate the strength of the linear relationship between SII, NLR and C-reactive protein (CRP) in children with SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Methods. A retrospective study was carried out on 42 cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection from April 2020 to January 2021 at the Institute for Child and Youth Health Care of Vojvodina in Novi Sad, Serbia. SII, NLR and CRP values were analyzed. The Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to measure the correlation between the variables. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results. A moderate positive correlation has been found between SII and CRP (p˂0.01; R2=0.525). A moderate positive correlation has been found between NLR and CRP (p=0.005; R2=0.447). A very strong positive correlation has been found between SII and NLR (p˂0.001; R2=0.932).
Conclusion. Our analysis shows that the correlation between SII and CRP, as well as between NLR and CRP, is significant in children with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Therefore, SII and NLR could be used as additional markers of the degree of inflammation.
