Abstract

Depression represents a significant burden for children and adolescents, their families and society overall. There is an increase in the incidence of depression in the last two decades. Depression affects both the physical and psychological health of children, and it can even result in a fatal outcome. Clinical presentation of depression in children can be similar, but in most cases, it can be significantly different than depression in adulthood. Due to the very complex, variable and non-specific symptomatology, depression in children is very difficult to detect, both by parents and by experts dealing with the mental health of young people. There are effective treatments and interventions, but for most, there are not enough stable long-term efficacy indicators, so the treatment guidelines differ in different countries. Lack of prospective studies has resulted in the fact that children often apply treatments based only on clinical experience and expert opinion. Redirection of resources to prevention, early detection, and early intervention is essential for the depression of childhood, precisely because of the proven transition of depression from childhood to adolescence or adulthood. Preventive programs that are already being implemented in some countries are showing some promising results. The National Guide of Good Clinical Practice for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Depression of the Republic of Serbia has a special chapter devoted to the treatment of depression in children and adolescents and it assists in assessment.
