Abstract

Abnormal breathing pattern in children may be caused by functional problems and real respiratory disorders as well. These abnormal breathing patterns may split and confuse the phyisicians, parents, health professionals. Childhood asthma as one of the most frequent respiratory problems presenting disoredered breathing deserves special attention ina group og non responders or uncontrolled asthmatic patients. Bearing on mind the fact that over 300 millions suffer asthma worldwide and more than 10% of pediatric population, it is not far from the truth that many of them presents with psychological problems together with somatic ones. Symptoms suggestive of dysfunctional breathing might have been detected by specially designed Nijmegen questionnaire. Although Nijmegen questionnaire has not been validated for asthma or for children, it is recommended for distinction between asthma and hyperventilation  in adults. The importance is in better asthma control, avoidance of unnecessary procedures and treatments, improvement of quality of life and maintenance of normal activities.
