Abstract

Hypertrophied adipose tissue is a significant source of reactive oxygen species (ROS)production, which increase expression of adipokines and macrophage infiltration. The latest further secrete another ROS, thus makingfeed-back loop between oxidative stress and low-grade inflammationin the adipose tissue, with impairement of signalling pathways and consequent many disorders like metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease. Studies show that lifestyle intervention based on a diet modification and increased and regular physical activity may decrease oxidative stress and inflammation. Furthermore, recent evidence support that antioxidant supplementation may improve antioxidant status. This paper focuses on the pathophysiological mechanisms of obesity-induced oxidative stress in children and adolescents, and the intervention strategies towards its reducing.
