Abstract

Introduction: Overweight and obese children and adolescents may face many health and psychosocial risks. Strength training is a type of exercise that allows this health-risk group to highlight and thus indicates a potentially positive effect on their physical and mental health.

Objective: A systematic review of previously published studies which have investigated the effects of strength training on body composition, muscle strength and psychosocial status of overweight and obese children and adolescents.

Materials and Methods: The original and review articles, and meta-analysis from the relevant databases (MEDLINE, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, ProQuest, Cochrane library) were investigated and included in the review.

Results: Strength training has a low to moderate efficiency to reduce the percentage of body fat in overweight and obese children and adolescents, and no impact on other measures of obesity. Strength training has a moderate to high efficiency to increase the strength of large muscle groups in overweight and obese children and adolescents. Strength training has a positive impact on the psychosocial status of overweight and obese children and adolescents, but the number of studies is limited.

Conclusion: Strength training is an effective way of exercise for achieving a healthier body composition in overweight and obese children and adolescents, the increase in non-fat body mass and reduce fat mass percentage, with potentially positive effects on their psychosocial status.
